After reading chapter 812, I am shocked to see how well Capone’s character has evolved. Many people thought that Capone wouldn’t be very relevant or strong, but he’s looking like a formidable force. Not only did Capone succeed in capturing Caesar Clown, he also outsmarted Sanji.
Throughout one piece…Sanji has been the one strawhat who specializes in outsmarting people. In the Alabasta arc, Sanji tricked Crocodile into believing that the Straw Hats were dead on Little Garden, and posed as “Mr. Prince” to save the strawhats inside of Crocodile’s casino. During the water 7 arc, Sanji used his keen observation skills to discover that Robin was leaving on the sea train. This led to Sanji sneaking aboard the train to rescue Nico Robin.
In other words, Sanji is a master at planning ahead. However…it seems that Capone is also a master at planning ahead. These panels are perfect examples of this:
Capone doesn’t have overpowered abilities or insane durability like the stereotypical villain. Capone’s best ability is his intellect, a trait that can be far superior than any amount of muscle. Of course Capone’s devil fruit helps, but his devil fruit powers are merely used as an extension of his superb tactical skills.
Flashback to this panel below: Capone tells Caesar that he will fire sea-stone bullets at him.
After Caesar comes down, Capone reveals that he didn’t really have sea-stone bullets. This is another shining example of Capone’s brilliance.
Al Capone, the character that Capone is based on, was also a master tactician. Al Capone was possibly the most famous criminal that ever lived, and was responsible for building a gigantic criminal business. Many old school mafia bosses such as Al Capone were known for their great ability to plan ahead. Al Capone was known for getting away with murder on numerous occasions. I can see why Oda made Capone such a smart tactician because it models the old school mob bosses.
I expect to see even more great tactics by Capone in the coming chapters. I’m also interested in which of the strawhats will face off against him in the future. Will Sanji fight Capone in the future…a battle of great tacticians? Or will Capone fight a different strawhat? Whoever defeats Capone will have to outsmart him as well, rather than simply using brute force. After outsmarting Sanji, I wonder who else he may outsmart in the coming chapters?
But one thing is for sure, do not underestimate Capone.
